Ernst Week 8- Hero

Ever since I was a kid, I have loved animals. There is something about the innocence of them that intrigues me. Also most of them are super cute. My favorite animals are dogs, monkeys, and bears (especially polar bears), which is a weird mix, I know. My favorite animal would definitely have to be dogs though. I have always grown up with at least one in the house. But don’t get me wrong, I like cats too.

My first dog was Teddy, a chow-chow. He was black and super fluffy. We had him from before I was born to about when I was in first grade. Then we got Pandy. She was a dalmatian-basset hound mix and was very very fat. We adopted her when she was about 9 or 10. She passed away from old age just a few years later. Then about five or six years ago we got Drake. We are not exactly sure what breed he is. All we really know is that he’s a mutt with some pitbull and possibly some shar-pei in him. He is about 9 years old now and is super sweet. He loves attention and belly rubs.

For most of my life, we only had one dog at a time, but four years ago, when my mom and I started volunteering at a shelter, we found Hero. We weren’t looking to get another dog, but then we saw a black dog huddled in the back of his kennel, extremely scared. I immediately started crying and asked the staff about him. He had been brought from a shelter in Tennessee where he was about to be euthanized. We walked him and he came out of his shell. He was only three years old and I was so confused as to why nobody else wanted him. We found out he was good with other dogs and I brought him home as soon as I could.

He was great with Drake and I was so glad we had gotten him. A year later we got a jack-russell/chihuahua mix named Jack. He is a psychopath, but I still love him. I love all of the dogs, but Hero has a special place in my heart. He is with me all the time and is probably one of my best friends. He is nowhere near perfect (he has terrible anxiety and has a past of nipping strangers; and he is a table surfer), but he is still my favorite thing ever and I will always be grateful I volunteered at the shelter and brought him home.

  1. I too love dogs, I think they add an element to an household that's impossible to attain without one. I had a rescue named Jake a few years ago and I cant remember what breed he was, but he was massive. I remember being dragged up the street literally as he'd choose his walk. I eventually got tired of the road rash I got from being dragged so I opped for some roller skates and that worked out. Overall I love dogs and I think they are great.
