A couple of weeks ago, I started to notice that I’ve been frequently feeling highly unmotivated to do anything and often prone to procrastination, which is odd for me because I’m usually the type of person that strives to get things done efficiently and on time. as a consequence, I started to examine my daily routine and write down when exactly I felt the most tired and lazy. That is when I started to notice a clear pattern. On the days where I had to wake up early while having an appropriate amount of sleep, were the days where I got most of my work done. But on the days where I had gone to bed late at night or sometimes the morning, were the days where I felt the most exhaustion and fatigue.
That when I started researching the effects of sleep deprivation and found that not only does it affects our mental, and physical health but our academic performance and productivity as well. without adequate sleep, our brains would have more difficulty concentrating, learning, and communicating. After digging deeper into this, it became clear that sleep deprivation can have serious repercussions on our health and that serious illnesses can be associated with sleeping disorders such as heart attack, stroke, and seizures. Sleeplessness has also been shown to lead to a greater risk of injury or the raised possibility of being in a motor vehicle crash, especially in the springtime when Daylight Saving Time goes into effect. There are some similarities when looking at drunk driving vs sleep-driving when it comes to risks. In short, not getting enough sleep has drastic effects on an individual’s ability to think clearly and for the body to function optimally, both leading to a myriad of consequences over time.
Overall sleep deprivation is a major issue, especially in today’s society where the American schedule is not constructive at all to maintaining healthy sleeping habits. I think we need to be more educated and aware of its effects on our lives. and that we should try and prioritize the importance of getting sufficient and qualitative sleep.
I agree, after learning more about how important sleep is, it seems like a lot of peoples issues could be relieved just by getting more sleep. I especially agree with your last sentence, I think sleep should be prioritized a lot more than it is.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree. We've been told for years to get 8-10 hours of sleep each night, but as life gets more busy with school and outside activities, less than 6 hours of sleep becomes the norm. This lack of sleep can lead to a lot of severe consequences.
ReplyDeleteSleep deprivation and lack of motivation is most definitely a motif among many students whilst learning remotely from home. I wonder if there are statistics showing how motivation among students and lack of sleep are correlated
ReplyDeleteIn this moment I am severely sleep deprived. With the amount of motivation it is taking to makeup these assignments while being sleep deprived doesn't help at all. We are always preached to get 8-9 hours of sleep every single night. With how hard school is becoming along with outside activities, that is quite impossible.
