Karve Week 9: The Butterfly Effect

The butterfly effect can be summarized in six words. Small changes can have large consequences. The literal meaning or application originated from an MIT scientist studying tornadoes. The scientist, Lorenz, was running a simulation on tornado trajectory. He had stepped away for a minute and noticed that the course of the tornado had changed because of butterflies. The seeming miniscule flapping of their wings was able to move a tornado, hence the name: The Butterfly Effect. While this information is fascinating, it is not enough to intrigue millions of people, so what makes the butterfly effect so fascinating? The simple answer is that the literal application can be applied metaphorically to the events of life. One small thing has the power to change the course of someone's entire life, without their knowledge. Maybe, in the first grade you were randomly assigned to sit next to someone, and 10 years later, that person is your best friend. It can be correlated to the idea that "everything happens for a reason." Personally, I think it's incredible how something so real, and clearly scientific, can be turned into something that affects the course of people's lives.

  1. yes I totally agree with you! I 'm a firm believer in the fact that everything happens for a reason but I didn't know that it was scientifically prove thou that's very informative.

  2. I've always thought that the butterfly effect is such a cool thing to think about. I find it fascinating how something so small can change someone's life so much. It reminds me of the movie Back to the Future, where every small change made the new world into a completely different place.

  3. This is such a good point. I have always believed in every happens are a reason, even though it does sound kinda cheesy, it's true. It's crazy how any little thing happens because it's supposed to happen that way. Sometimes in the moment it's hard to figure out why something happens whether it be good or bad.

  5. The idea of the butterfly effect is really interesting. I think the idea that small things can do great impacts is something that everyone needs to realize about their actions.

  6. I've actually never thought about this from the psychology side of it. It definitely is very scientific and I believe the theory to be true. Small things can effect the rest of your life and you may never even know it! Crazy!
