About four years ago, I joined the National Junior Honor Society, which I soon realized would end up changing my life. To be in the club, I had to do a certain amount of volunteer work. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, but then my mom and I remembered that she used to volunteer at an animal shelter a few years ago that isn’t too far from our house. We went there and almost immediately began volunteering, and we’ve been doing it ever since.
My mom and I go at least twice a week (more in the summer). We volunteer with the dogs, walking them and socializing with them. The staff is great, but there’s only so much they can do in such little time with so many dogs, so volunteers are very important. I technically can not walk the dogs since I am not 18 yet, but I walk with them and spend lots of time with them in the play yard (a big gated area). Soon I will be able to walk them myself!
Since volunteering at the Center for Animal Health and Welfare, I have learned so many new things and gained so much. We got two of my dogs from there, Hero and Jack. I have met so many amazing people and dogs. My favorite dog right now is Riggs. I love all the dogs, but I am closest to him. He is a border collie mix and is about two years old. He has been at the shelter for over a year now! He is scared of strangers and does not like other dogs that much, but other than that he is perfect! He loves to cuddle and play fetch. I really hope he finds a home soon! Sometimes it can be very sad and stressful because of how long the dogs have been there or their past stories, but it’s so rewarding to see them go home.
