Tayi Week 5 - Independence

All my life I have been under the influence and supervision of my parents. The most time that I have spent away from them was the better half of a week, and even then I was still with other family members. My parents have always wanted me to become proficient in the medical field, and my top priority is to make them proud. That being said, the medical field is extremely competitive and I need some advantages that would help me stand out. Since my dad is a doctor, he got me the opportunity to shadow a medical professional that “is really important.” I guess that means he is a doctor that is extremely influential? Maybe he performs open-heart surgery daily? Either way, this is an opportunity I need to take.

The only issue, as insignificant as it is, will be that I have to travel to California alone. I won't even be able to fly across the country with anyone I know. I will be staying in California with one of my dad’s friends that I have never met, for more than half the summer. It's not a big enough issue for me to not take the opportunity, but I know for a fact that I'm going to get homesick quickly, due to the fact that I will be separated from my family for what feels like the longest time.

A lot of things are going to be different without my parents around. The atmosphere will be super uncomfortable for a while. I’ll be eating different foods. Living under different rules. Forcing myself to act professional for weeks. I think I'm going to become exhausted very quickly. Fortunately for me though, I will be able to experience something new, something that I have never experienced before: independence. Highly desired by kids, largely admonished by adults. However, I will look on in adulation of the medical career that I hope will flourish in the future.

  1. That seems like a really important opportunity! You will learn so much, not only about the medical field but also about yourself when you go to California. I've been to some sleep away summer camps that lasted for a few weeks, but I've never really felt too homesick because while it was a different environment, there were tons of other kids around me who were going through the same thing. Your situation will probably be more lonely, but on the bright side, you will have a lot of experience living independently before college, and that's pretty beneficial to you!

  2. This sounds like something you can really enjoy. Even though you will be working a lot of the time you will also have the opportunity to experience a lot of new places and things with your extended family. I hope you have a great time!

  3. This experience may not be easy at first, but the challenge and experience of this trip will allow you to view the world in a new lens. I traveled to New York for a job and being on your own can be daunting, but you must not doubt your own ability to adapt. Yuo will be able to see what the pros and cons of how independence can be, how important it is to confide but not depend on others, and how important it is to trust yourself that you can grow as a person.

  4. This sounds like an amazing oppurtunity. Although it probably will be hard at first, im sure you will get used to it and it will all be worth it in the end as this sounds like a very good oppurtunity to experience the career first hand with a high-level medical professional.
