Henchy Week 5 - Long Term Effects of the Pandemic

This is something that I was reading about the other day that I thought was interesting.  Obviously, in the current situation, everyone's lives are significant changed with masks, insane schedules, limited social lives, etc.  A year into the pandemic, with little sign of it breaking, it seems as if this may be our reality for at least another 6 months to come.  However, what is most interesting to me is what life will be like after the pandemic.

Once the pandemic is technically over, and by over I mean all government restrictions have been lifted, there will probably be several changes to the everyday American life.  Firstly, a ton of people will probably continue to wear masks voluntarily.  Personally, the masks already give me headaches after a long day of school (or maybe that's just my classes.  Who knows?), but some people will become very worried about catching other viruses, bacteria, or even common colds.

This is the most obvious effect of the pandemic, but there are many other 'hidden' ones.  Consider money.  For many years, some groups have pushed for the extermination of coins in our economy because they seem to serve minimal purpose.  With the rise of online shopping, this may become a much more realistic push?

Many have had to work from home so much during this pandemic.  Could this be the start of a much large online-working culture?  Many people may be allowed to work from home once or twice a week, even all week.  These adaptations to an online work culture could allow for post-pandemic flexibility with work times, and this may give all of us more options when it comes to completing work and attending all of our responsibilities.

Another change I have considered is environmentalism.  Some have argued this pandemic has actually helped humanity in the long run by allowing the environment to recover from all of the CO2 emissions (while there might be a statistical argument for this, it seems a little heartless to me to call this pandemic "worth it" to save the environment, but to each their own).   This pandemic may be a kick-start to more environmentally-friendly views.  It has raised awareness about our crippling environmental situation.

These are probably only some of the effects of the pandemic.  There will be many others that we do not even realize until after the pandemic actually ends.  Our lives will truly never be the same as they were before COVID.

  1. It will be very interesting to see how the world changes after the pandemic. I am not hoping for any one change, all I can do is hope that the world changes for the better. I haven't even thought about the pandemics effect on the environment, but now that you mention it, it is an important fact that should not be overlooked.

  2. I haven't really thought too much about what life will be like after the pandemic. I definitely agree that people will still wear masks voluntarily. It's sad to think about, but I really don't see a way that we're ever going to get back to our normal pre-pandemic lives since things are always changing and being developed.

  3. I think about how the pandemic will end all the time, but I don't ever see that happening soon. I think that a lot of things will never really go back to normal but I think that until it happens all that we can do is hope for the best.

  4. I am very excited to see how everything is going to look once everything will go back to normal. I keep thinking about this but will kids have snow days now that we are able to work remotely online? I remember when I was younger I would wish for snow days so I wonder what is going to happen. I do agree that everything is going to be more flexible now that we know we can work this way.
